My Great Big Sewing Resolution – Liberty Lobelia Top: The Result

Liberty 100% cotton fabric material purple blue flower print

Here’s my 3rd top for 2016! Today, I’m happy to showcase the extra project I mentioned in my last sewing post, the Liberty Lobelia Top.

The making of the Liberty Lobelia Top

Liberty fabrics are expensive – this particular print, the Mirabelle, can retail upwards of £25 a meter. I managed to get a bargain bucket 1.5 metre piece for a whopping £5. I stashed it away, waiting for the right sewing pattern to appear.  Last month that pattern turned up in the form of the Lobelia Tee, by Magdalena Langa.

It’s a ridiculously simple pattern, ideal for advanced beginners. I didn’t bother with the pocket, but I kept the epaulets, slightly adjusting them so I have the option to either wear the sleeves down or rolled up.

This is the first time I have used a Magdalene Langa pattern – and I like it.  Simple to follow instructions and quick and easy to assemble PDF pattern, there is little to fault this sewing pattern.

My only slight quibble – seam allowances aren’t included, so the time you save assembling the pattern, you lose again adding in the seam allowances.

That said, the Lobelia Tee is ideal for plain or bi-directional fabric prints, and the top can easily be dressed up or down to fit in with your wardrobe.  I was very pleased that it only took me 2 hours from start to finish, including hand sewing the hem and cuffs. I’m seriously considering making another Lobelia Tee by the end of the week.

  • Fabric used: Liberty Tana Lawn, Mirabelle C (purple colour way), 100% cotton
  • Pattern used: Lobelia Tee, by Magdalena Langa
  • Amount used: 1.2 meters
  • Special features: Adapted size of epaulets, self made bias binding and hand stitched hem and cuffs

Have you used any of the patterns by Magdalene Langa?  What do you think of them? What do you think of my new top? Please comment below as I would love to hear your opinions.

Next Project

Possibly another off-schedule Liberty Lobelia Tee or on-schedule Shirt Dress – which do you think I should go for?

Thanks for reading.
